Computers are just supposed to work, grrrr! Today I got this error:
A recently installed program has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall the program. The following file name might help you identify the program that made the change: C:\WINDOWS\system32\BCMLogon.dll
I couldn’t switch the logon screen, and I couldn’t access the internet. I ran to another PC and found the solution to this problem.
To resolve the problem and restore the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching, you need to reset the GinaDLL entry using these steps:
[UPDATE: There have been some useful comments made below, you might want to check them out before proceeding.]
* Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT
* Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon
* Backup the key by exporting to a file.
* In the right pane, right-click GinaDLL, and then click Delete. (You need to remove the whole value, not just its Value Data)
* Close Registry Editor

How To Use the Fast User Switching Feature in Windows XP
Thanks for giving me a pain in my rear bcmlogon.dll
“Thanks for giving me a pain in my rear bcmlogon.dll”
“bcmlogon.dll” has EVERYTHING to do with how your wireless is controlled. If windows controls your wireless you are OK. If not, you need to let windows control your wireless conection…
All you had to do is in “run” type “msconfig” temporarily disable your wireless card… restart/reboot, enable the “Fast User Switching Feature”, restart/reboot, re-enable your wireless (msconfig) resart/reboot. Done
Based on mike464’s response I found a Dell specific solution to this problem that does not involve registry editing.
In the Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility > Wireless Networks [Tab] > Edit [Button] > Options [Tab]: Under “Windows domain logon settings”, selecting “Authenticate prior to Windows domain logon” [checkbox] will generate the BCMLogon.dll error. Deselecting it, in my situation, eliminated this error.
Thanks a million for your help. I followed your instructions and it worked. Dont know where gina.dll came from? any idea?
Thanks for help!
This solution defentely works.
The pain in the ass ‘dell wireless tool’ causes the problem in my case.
After deleting the registrykey in safemode, the laptop is starting normally.
instantly de-installed the 3th party wireless tool and let windows control the wireless connection again.
I’m glad I was able to help! This thing BCMLogon issue drove me insane. And that’s great to know Donoho, thanks.
Removing the GinaDLL key from the registry solved my problem and it was quick and painless. Note to self…When editing the registry, ALWAYS create a backup of the registry FIRST. LOL…
Thanks a lot for the information.
Take it easy!
Thank you so much for this, I was wondering what the hell happened that that screen wasn’t coming up! God love the internet, you can get any info off of it. Again, thanks guys for this info!
DONOHO IS TOTALY RIGHT!
u don’t need to do anything in the registry,do not need to delete any dll’s….do not need to restart also!
just uncheck the option “autenticate prior to domain logon” and that’s it…
that is because when u use domain accounts and if u need to login to a domain,or if just your computer “thinks” he needs to login to a domain,it cannot use fastswich…thats the whole problem….
THANKS A BUNCH!! MY LAPTOP HAS BEEN ACTING VERY WEIRD LATELY. WHERE DID THIS GINA THING COME FROM ANYWAY??
If you’re logging into a active directory domain, and you’re using locally cached profiles, then unchecking “authenticate prior to login” will fix your problem. This assumes, of course, that you’ve previously logged into that computer and your domain policies allow your credentials to be cached. If not, or…. if you use mandatory profiles, then you need to use the “Regedit-Delete GinaDll” solution mentioned above. Otherwise, your wireless connection won’t be active when you attempt to login.
We have a lab full of laptops with different students logging into each laptop every day. We also use mandatory profiles and we don’t allow cached credentials, so we need the laptop to authenticate with the WAP first. For us, the solution was deleting GinaDll.
Thanks, btw…. Your solution to the bcmlogon.dll issue REALLY helped me out.
Thanks so much! I had know idea it was so easy.
This Was A Life Saver! It Definately Works…
I tried to use the DELL Specific fix posted by Donoho and under the Wireless Networks Tab I do not have an edit button. Any next steps?
Thanks so much Donoho and everyone - I’ve never tried fixing anything myself because I’ve never found a site like this before.. I just googled the weird error message and actually understood what to do!
To Katie — I have the same lack of an “edit” button. I found my option under Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility>Wireless Networks>properties — you’ll find the “authenticate” checkbox at the bottom.
Unfortunately Donoho’s solution didn’t work for me, as my box was already unselected. I’ll have to try something else.
The easiest way is rename GinaDLL. Done. You don’t need backup or delete it.
Renaming GinaDLL works great!
Thanks for the help. It was really really well put.
Thanks it was FAST to fix once i read what you wrote…. Thanks a Million
