Iowa Hawkeyes kicked ass once again at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, IA
Read all about it at HawkeyeSports.com. Here are some quotes from the coaches.

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz:
“Our guys competed, they played hard. Especially the corners, they had a tough match-up because we all know they aren’t the tallest group.

(On Albert Young) He is really playing good football, very versatile player, and very unselfish player.

They came in here expecting to win and they should with them having a better record. They are a very good football team.

(On the Indiana Offense) It’s just one of those days where everything was working, they were hummin’ and moving the ball right along.

(On the Iowa running game) We did better in the fourth quarter, we kept at it and stuck with it. Wh

Indiana Coach Terry Hoeppner:
“(Indiana had more total yardage than Iowa) It doesn’t really matter what you do….(with total yardage, if you don’t win). I’ve been here before. We need to congratulate Iowa. With 101 plays. You gotta do better than that. We gave up too many big plays. We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities.

We just need to coach better and play better.

Yes. I thought we might throw 60 times, because of the nature of their defense. We got ourselves in too many long yardage situations. We wanted to run the ball better and more than we did today.

We thought it was going to be a 60-minute, 15 rounder here today.

I thought our pass protection, for the most part, was good. (Quarterback Blake Powers?) He kind of played the way I coached today, which was just good. We’ve got to do better than that.

(James Hardy?) He continues to make big catches, and big plays. We’re really happy with the way he’s playing. But that’s kind of hollow now.”

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Northern Iowa game quotes. The following is from HawkeyeFootball.com

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz:

“We showed some improvement today but also showed there is still some improvement needed.

He looked like the old Drew Tate today.

We’re very much still in the developmental stage as a football team. We’re going to have to make a lot of improvement this week.

(On the Ohio State Game) We definitely have our work cut out for us. Over three games we have not showed the consistency we need to have.

(On Damian Sims) Basically his heart’s not into playing defense and you certainly need that to be successful.

(On the run game) It’s going to be real important for us throughout the whole season.”

Northern Iowa Coach Mark Farley:

“I was pleased with our second half offense. Our offense moved the ball against a very good defense. We protected the quarterback well and our receivers caught the ball. Except for the fumbles, I thought our offense did a very good job.

(On the defensive side) it was a combination of what their offense did and what our defense didn’t, or wasn’t able to do. We couldn’t stop the run and that paved the way for their play action.

The reality is we played a very good football team, fell behind, and then came back to our game plan. We know what kind of football team we have now. Defensively, there were a couple of breakdowns for us. But Drew Tate is a good, smart quarterback. He did a good job of seeing what was going to happen when he came to the line of scrimmage.

There’s a lot we can build on offensively, and a lot we can learn from film on defense.”

The following is from HawkeyeFootball.com

“Iowa won the toss and elected to receive. The Hawkeyes have started on offense in 65 of their last 69 games. Iowa has started on offense in 67-of-75 contests under Kirk Ferentz.

QB Drew Tate was 5-11 for 57 yards in the first half before leaving the game, leaving his career total at 2,997 passing yards.

Albert Young’s 36-yard run on his first carry of the game is a career best. Young had a 31-yard run in the opening win over Ball State. Young had 18 carries for 140 yards for the best rushing total of his career. Young’s previous best game was 87 yards in the 2004 season opener vs. Kent State.

PK Kyle Schlicher was successful on his first field goal attempt of the season, a 44-yarder in the third quarter. Schlicher scored eight points in Iowa’s opening win, making all of his PAT attempts. Schlicher is now 22-27 in career field goals, including 4-8 from outside 40 yards.

Starting for the first time in their careers today were redshirt freshman Seth Olsen (OL) and sophomore Albert Young (RB).

Iowa lost its third fumble of the season on its first possession and its fourth later in the period on a bad snap from shot gun formation. The Hawkeyes lost a third fumble in the fourth quarter, giving them five lost fumbles in two games. Last season Iowa lost just five fumbles in 12 games.

Iowa suffered two interceptions in the second period, with one of those being returned for a touchdown. That return marked the first time an opponent returned an interception for a score since the loss at Michigan in 2004.

The five turnovers by the Hawkeyes mark the highest in one game since they had five turnovers (two interceptions, three lost fumbles) in a loss at Michigan in 2004.

All 23 Iowa State points came following Iowa turnovers, including an interception for a score, a 12-yard touchdown drive following a fumble and a 42-yard field goal drive following an interception.

Sophomore CB Adam Shada had his first career interception in the first period, picking off a pass that was deflected by Charles Godfrey.

When Iowa State scored first in the game, it marked the first time Iowa has trailed in the series since the third quarter of the 2002 contest in Iowa City.

Iowa failed to score a point in the first half for the first time since the third game of the 2004 season, a loss at Arizona State. Today marks the first time Iowa did not score a touchdown in a game since a 6-4 win at Penn State in 2004.

Today’s game marks the first time Iowa has not scored a touchdown in the series against Iowa State since 1978 when ISU scored a 31-0 decision.

Iowa’s defense was led by its senior linebackers Chad Greenway and Abdul Hodge, along with senior DE Mike Follett. Greenway and Hodge each totaled 13 tackles, while Follett collected two of Iowa’s three sacks in his five tackles.

DB Marcus Paschal recorded 10 tackles, marking the third time in his career he has reached double figures in tackles. His career-high is 12 tackles (at Minnesota, 2004).

Iowa had its nine-game winning streak snapped with the loss at Iowa State. The winning streak ranked fourth in the nation coming into the game.

WR Ed Hinkel had a 28-yard reception in the fourth quarter, which was career catch No. 100.

TE Scott Chandler had a career-high seven receptions (72 yards). His previous career best was four receptions last season vs. Purdue, with those catches good for 122 yards. “

When you first think of romance, Iowa might not come to mind. In truth, romantic destinations in Iowa are excellent and show you a beautiful hidden side of this underappreciated state.

Romantic Destinations in Iowa

The Hawkeye State, Iowa, holds much more beauty than a lot of travelers give it credit for. There are ten different travel areas for tourists to explore when they come to this state, from the Northwest area (where you can follow the path of historic explorers Louis and Clark) to the Southeast area that boasts of containing the world’s “crookedest” street. Lovers will also find much to do here, such as solitary hiking and just holing up in a room and enjoying each other’s company – romantic destinations in Iowa are enjoyable for everyone!

Pines on the Prairie Bed and Breakfast is located in Wilton, Iowa, just 30 or so minutes from Davenport and Iowa City, Iowa. This bed and breakfast offers all of the hospitality of a Midwest inn, with the Mississippi River just a small ways outside your door! Located in eastern Iowa, the Pines on the Prairie Bed and Breakfast is convenient to both the Wildcat Den and Palisades Kepler State Parks, which makes it an ideal spot to stay for your outdoor themed trip. This 1910 home, decorated in the “Arts and Crafts” style, is great for seclusion – you are never forced to spend time around other guests unless you want to.

This b & b has just two rooms, which means you will get a level of service that you might not find in larger inns or hotels. The Prairie Room is perfect for couples, with a comfortable queen size bed and its own shower. The Pine Loft is larger (it can accommodate up to six people), but it also includes a claw foot tub as well as other amenities that complete this spacious room. Lovely green plants and a library’s worth of books make this nook of a room one of the most perfect places for romantic destinations in Iowa.

Potter’s Mill bed and breakfast is lodged in Iowa’s oldest grist mill (from 1843). This beautiful inn and restaurant is also a great place to have your next romantic retreat. Located in Bellvue, Iowa, Potter’s Mill offers guests five rooms to choose from, with different themes and motifs in each. Gourmet breakfasts are also included. The atmosphere in this inn is like no other, with the mill theme including exposed beams and other subtle hints to the building’s original purpose. The Potter’s Mill’s restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner.

Spending some quality time with the one you love in picturesque Iowa can be just the thing for any special occasion. Whether you are celebrating a birthday or an anniversary, you can be sure romantic destinations in Iowa will be just the thing.

Cedar Rapids is a city in Linn County, Iowa. Cedar Rapids, which had a population of 120,758 as of the 2000 census, is currently the second most populous city in the state of Iowa, after Des Moines. Cedar Rapids is part of a combined urban area with Iowa City, which lies just to the South. The area was a whole is generally referred to, by locals, as the “Corridor”, and the combined population of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor is 360,326.

Here is some more information about the area:

- Some of the major companies headquartered in Cedar Rapids include McLeodUSA and Rockwell Collins.

- The main airport serving Cedar Rapids is The Eastern Iowa Airport.

- The main professional sports team in Cedar Rapids is the baseball team, the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

- Cedar Rapids is only one of a handful of cities in the world with its municipal buildings located on island in the river. In the case of Cedar Rapids, city hall and the county courthouse are located on Mays Island, an island in the middle of the Cedar River.

- Cedar Rapids is sometimes known as the “City of Five Seasons” – these are supposed to be the traditional four seasons as well as fifth season as a time to enjoy the other four. This nickname is commemorated by a sculpture in the downtown area (known as the “Five Seasons” sculpture), as well as in various local jokes such as the “city of five smells”, referring to the smells from factories around the city.

- According to the manufacturers’ information, the fictional character, WindChill (a GI Joe action-figure toy) is supposedly from Cedar Rapids.

Don’t give too much credence to the various doom and gloom predictions of the last year or two about the United State’s real estate market. Home value prices aren’t drastically dropping, the market isn’t crashing and the housing bubble isn’t bursting. It’s simply coming down and leveling out from an uncharacteristic boom of the last decade or so. Besides, knowing what the national medial home value is won’t help you find the perfect new home and area for yourself.

Real estate is an investment, so it’s important to invest somewhere your home is bound to gain value over the years. To do so, you have to examine the specific area you may be investing in. Take a look as past home value and sales trends. Then look at that area’s economy, population changes, job opportunities, unemployment rates and the attractions the area offers. A strong combination of these factors will almost always indicate the potential for large home value appreciation over the years.

Iowa, with its capital of Des Moines, is a state lodged partway between the mid-west and the east coast and is influenced by both. Iowa was home to about 2,982,085 people in 2006 and continues to grow thanks to many factors, but not least of which is low home value averages and a growing economy. Iowa deals mostly with hogs, corn, soybeans, oats, cattle and dairy products on its agricultural side, while its industry sectors include food processing, machinery, electric equipment, chemical products, printing and publishing and primary metals. Although tourism isn’t a major industry in the state, Iowa still has plenty to offer.

Any place that has attractions to offer visitors has a chance to draw in more and more residents. Obviously, the more in demand a spot is to live in, the higher the average home value is bound to be. While Iowa may not be an obvious vacation spot for most, it doesn’t change the fact that the state has plenty to offer in the way of museums, festivals, theme parks, historical sites, water parks and state parks. National historic landmarks include old frontier farms, stations on the Underground Railroad and one of the most famous, the Amana Colonies, seven authentic German villages that were founded as a religious commune 150 years ago and still preserve their traditions, way of life and crafts. You can also retrace the steps of Lewis and Clark, catch a hint of the Old West at rodeos, horse ranches and cattle trails or get a taste of city life in Des Moines. There is of course camping, fishing, boating, hiking and other outdoor activities galore, and the metropolitan areas of the state offer plenty of night life (clubbing, bars, dining, music, etc) as well as shopping, exploring and family entertainment. While not traditionally thought of as a hot spot to visit, Iowa does have plenty of activities for anyone looking for a laid back, simple vacation.

Though Iowa may not have quite the tourist pull as other states, it’s still doing fine in important matters of unemployment, income and economy (the things that really drive home value prices). Iowa’s unemployment rate is down to about 3.6% and has seen a growth of job opportunities in sectors such as trade, transportation and utilities and leisure and hospitality, which may be an indication of a growing tourism sector. The median household income was projected to be about $46,170 in 2005, but has actually declined from inflation adjusted values in 2000 to $43,609. Iowa falls about in the middle when it comes to household income compared to other states.

The low cost of housing helps offset lower income, as the average home value sales price in April 2007 was only about $146,075 and in the 1st quarter of this year, the median home value of properties sold was only at about $110,000. As a matter of fact, all housing-related costs are low in Iowa, with only 12% of households spending more than 30% of their income on housing, which is the second lowest in the country. These facts show that although home value rates in Iowa are not appreciating noticeably (and in some areas seem to be decreasing) the cost of living is low enough to offset the low home value appreciation. Des Moines, the biggest city in Iowa, seems to be very affordable, with home value appreciation slow but steady over the last few months, and a median home value of about $109,000. Sioux City and Iowa City are the more pricey areas to live in the state, with median home values the past couple months of $139,178 and $225,831 respectively.

All in all, Iowa does not have the strongest real estate market nor highest home value appreciation in the country. There has been moderate decrease in some areas, while other areas have seen a modest increase in home value. However, with a growing job force, more employment opportunities and such a low cost of living (and housing for that matter) there is no reason why over the next year or so, people wouldn’t want to at least visit the state. If Iowa can create more incentive to live there, there is no reason why a large influx of wannabe residents won’t help get home value averages rising and the market going strong again.

The cost to repair damages to Iowa City buildings after Thursday’s tornadoes has been estimated at $3.6 million, but city officials said final estimates may be much higher.

“These are just preliminary estimates,” Iowa City manager Steve Atkins said during a council work session Monday. “There is a great deal of damage you can’t see.”

Atkins said the estimates were based on the cost to replace damaged structures to the city’s eight public properties after the two tornadoes that swept through Iowa City. The properties are: Court Street Transportation Center, Iowa City Public Library, Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, Senior Center, Senior Center pedestrian bridge, Wilson Building U Smash-Em, Old Capitol Towne Center parking ramp and the Sheraton Hotel parking ramp.

The estimates were submitted in an application for financial assistance to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Atkins also said city engineers plan to appraise the damages on the buildings a second time to get a more accurate number.
