As you travel through Iowa you will begin to see the meaning behind the terms, “Corn State” or “Hawkeye State” as the state has been phrased. Bordered by Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Missouri, the state of Iowa has produced some celebrities to make not of. Former present of the United States Herber Hoover called Iowa his home. The state also is birthplace of the jazz musician and swing bandleader Glenn Miller. Anyone who loves cowboy movies would be thrilled to find out that John Wayne is also a native to the state. There are many historic events that Iowa has claim to. It’s also here that the Lewis and Clark expedition has been connected to.
Though not an extremely large state, at 56,000 square miles, Iowa is first in corn and soybean production and also is first in hog production. It is a flat state located between the great North American rivers, the Mississippi on the east, and the Missouri River on the west. The Iowa caucuses are an early political event in the quest for the presidency. That alone may give you an idea for your Iowa Incorporation. After all, billions of dollars go to political consultants each election year and the huge media impact of this event is well known.
Iowa is a strongly agricultural state, and also has historically and still to some extent presently, the production of farm implements, washing machines, refrigerators and processed foods. Its industrial outputs are food processing, machinery, electric equipment, chemical products, nd primary metals. Iowa produces the nation’s largest amount of ethanol for gasoline. Des Moines also serves as a center for the insurance industry.
It’s no secret that health insurance can cost an arm and a leg. For many people health insurance is so expensive that they are simply forced to go without it at all.
Obviously if you are offered health insurance at work or if you can obtain health insurance at group rates through some organization that you belong to, then you should probably look into such coverage since group insurance rates are almost always lower than individual rates – plus a group insurance may accept pre-exiting conditions more readily than an individual policy will.
For more and more people, especially those working out of their homes, group insurance rates simply aren’t an option. Fortunate there are still a few things you can do to keep your rates on the low side.

Iowa has some of the lowest auto insurance rates in the United States, which is good news for Dubuque residents looking for car insurance. Even so, insurance costs can vary widely from one insurance company to another and you want to make sure you’re getting the cheapest rate possible. To save on your auto insurance, follow these tips:
Drop Extra Coverages You Don’t Need
You may be paying for insurance coverage you never or rarely need, such as towing and rental coverage. Consider dropping these extra coverages to lower your insurance rate.
Depending on the age of your auto, you may also want to drop your comprehensive and collision coverage. Most insurance companies recommend dropping these coverages if your auto is more than five years old.
Get All the Discounts You Qualify For
Insurance companies offer a variety of discounts that will lower your auto insurance rate. Ask your insurer if you qualify for any of these discounts:
The red oak is also called the northern red oak and although has been widely cultivated in Germany and Australia, it is native to North America. If you are considering using this tree, here is an overview.
The northern red oak is a variety of oak that is native to North America. The tree grows very rapidly and favors acidic soil. Its native range is from Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada although it is found as far south as Georgia in the United States. In the forests, the tree grows to heights of from 115 feet to 141 feet. Trees grown in the open tend to be a bit shorter, but often have thicker trunks.
The main characteristic of the red oak is its bark which has ridges topped with what appear to be almost shiny strips. Other varieties of oak have similar bark ridges and strips, but they normally occur only on the upper portion of the trees. The ridges on the red oak go all the way to the bottom and are one of the quickest ways to identify the tree. The branches tend to grow at right angles from the stems which produce a rounded narrow head.
It would be easy to tell you to just jump online, find one of the many sites that allow you to make comparisons of the prices of homeowner’s insurance policies from a variety of different insurance companies and be done with it.
Unfortunately doing that will not necessarily get you the cheapest homeowner’s insurance that you can find online in Iowa.
The good news is, the steps you need to take before getting online to look for your cheap homeowner’s policy are all relatively easy to take.
Let’s start with smoking. If you smoke you are going to pay more for your homeowner’s insurance. It’s that simple. You need to stop smoking if you want to get the best possible rates. If you already have a homeowner’s insurance policy and you were a smoker at the time you took out the policy but you have since quit, you need to let your agent know as you will be in line for a rather nice reduction in your monthly premiums.
The capital of Iowa, Des Moines is a sprawling city noted for kicking off the U.S. Presidential campaigns every four years. If you are looking for a more traditional place to raise a family, this may be the place.
Des Moines also serves as the seat of Polk County, and is the center of a growing metropolitan area. With an estimated 196,857 residents in 2006, Des Moines has experienced marginal growth since 1990. The core population peaked at 208,982 in 1960. Since then, outlying suburbs have boosted the overall metro population to over 534,230. While Des Moines has successfully annexed bordering areas, a plan to merge governments with Polk County was soundly rejected by voters. The median age of city residents was 35.6 years in 2006 with 76% of the population being White non-Hispanic. Another 8% were African American, 10% Hispanic and 4% Asian. The African American and Hispanic populations are significantly higher than the Iowa average. About 10% of residents were foreign born, significantly higher than the state average. Over 25% of residents claimed German ancestry. Families made up 62% of Des Moines households. The 2006 median income for households in Des Moines was $41,651, slightly under the state average. It was somewhat below the national average of $46,242. Unemployment in 2006, at 6.8% among the civilian workforce, was greater than the national trend. About 15% of the population lived in poverty, equal in percentage to the number of dropouts in Des Moines.
Don Ed Hardy, fondly known as the “The Godfather of Modern Tattoo”, has undoubtedly revolutionized the way the world sees Tattoo Art. Over a decade ago, Tattoo Art seemed fit only for the skin of bikers and tough guys, but that is certainly no longer the case. Don Ed Hardy started out his career using traditional methods of painting before he became a Tattoo artist, and with the initiative of the impressive Frenchman Christian Audigier, Don Ed Hardy’s art is much sought after.
Don Ed Hardy was born in Iowa in 1945, but he and his family moved to Costa Mesa, California less than a year after he was born. He is known to be the first American tattoo artist to incorporate Japanese aesthetics and techniques to his designs. His love for tattooing was evident, even as a little boy. He would copy and design his own fake tattoos. It was only during his high school years that his interest in tattoo art took a backseat to his love for Kustom Kulture.
Tornadoes are deadly and there’s nothing you can do to prevent them. Remember the Iowa City Tornado of 2006?
There’s a new tornado in the news which had a bad outcome.
A tornado slammed a Boy Scout camp in the remote hills of western Iowa on Wednesday, killing at least four people and injuring 40, most of whom were on a hike when the twister struck.
All of the children had been accounted for late Wednesday, after rescuers cut their way through downed trees and debris to reach them, said Russ Lewrenson of the Mondamin Fire Department

Mortgage defaults in the Des Moines real estate market are all over the news, and home sellers are left wondering what will happen to their homes. Without the much needed level of subprime mortgages to balance out the market, how will home purchases rebound, or better yet, remain consistent? Home sellers will need to step up the game in order to entice new buyers to purchase their homes. It is no longer the simple task of finding a mortgage and buying, now, with mortgages being more tight reigned than ever before, it is about showing why your property is THE one to buy.
Home sellers can list their home below market value, offer open houses and even advertise their property only to find that their home remains on the market month after month. Mortgage approvals are following stricter guidelines thanks to a wealth of subprime foreclosures and buyers are feeling the weight of this crunch. If a seller wants to sell their home, they will need to show why the home is a great deal.
Summer is here, the kids are out of school, the first swarm of mosquitoes has arrived. All you bow hunters know that deer season is right around the corner. I am trying to get all my outdoor home projects done before it gets too close to hunting season. The spring food plots are in. The mineral Licks have been made. My summer bow shooting schedule is starting. We have a lot going on.
We have finished our spring food plots. This year we are going to do things differently. Last year we planted all our plots in the fall with our fall blends because of the very dry summer. This spring we had some of the annuals make it through the winter. A few turnips made it along with quite a bit of rape plants.
What types of communities are available in Iowa and what is the real estate market like? Well first you should know that Iowa is a land locked state. This means that you do not have the water from Lakes or the ocean in the area like Michigan or Florida. This means that most often you have to look for the communities that offer lakes and hope that the Iowa real estate is still affordable. Most of the communities available in Iowa are generally farming, and agriculture. However you can find some really pretty places to retire in Iowa in the north if you are interested. As for the market, like most of the United States it is seeing a low. Foreclosures and investment properties are really what is available.
Before looking at the general market let us look at the investments you can find. When homes are being foreclosed on that means many individuals are looking to rent, it also means that many investors are able to find properties for a decrease in actual value. Therefore, for investors you may want to check out properties that require a fix and flip or a rental investment. Many individuals will need to rent the homes for around $1000 a month or less. This means that the deal must have some long term return or a mortgage that can handle such a low rent for a home. Keep in mind that many of the individuals looking for rental properties probably had a foreclosure so they really need a deal.
Iowa is the latest Rock CD released by the highly group Slipknot and they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Slipknot fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.
I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Iowa. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.
Iowa is a nicely varied, mix of 14 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly talented musicians. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.
Listen and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Slipknot is clearly a group that is in top form.
While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 3 – Disasterpiece, track 5 – Everything Ends, and track 6 – The Heretic Anthem
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 8 – Left Behind. It’s a great track!

Thousands of households in rural America have yet to transition into the age of high-speed Internet access for a very good reason: no availability of DSL or cable. Because the economics of adding DSL or laying cable in sparsely populated areas doesn’t provide a sufficient return on investment, it could be years before many rural Americans have access to the information superhighway. Increasingly, many stuck on slow dial-up are turning to high speed satellite Internet (similar to satellite TV) as a solution.
Available today from several providers, satellite Internet requires a separate dish antenna mounted at the customer’s home, along with cable running to a satellite modem that connects to a personal computer. Previously this required an upfront investment of hundreds of dollars for home equipment, which also required professional installation. Other drawbacks included reliability issues due to weather related problems, and difficulty in scheduling rapid service calls.
To overcome these challenges, brothers Dwayne & Michael Hay founded SkyWay USA in rural Jackson, Kentucky. For less than $100, the SkyWay USA system can be ordered online, shipped directly to your home, and self-installed in a matter of hours. Coupled with an entry-level service fee of $29.95/month, SkyWay USA touts itself as rural America’s low-cost satellite Internet provider.
Don’t Show, Dramatize! — Even Better Than “Show, Don’t Tell.”
I’m sure that, at some point, you’re heard the adage Show, Don’t Tell. There’s even a rather good writing book by that title. Here’s a new aphorism: Dramatize, Don’t Just Show. Important information should be woven into the action and the results of it shown in the scene. It’s a tough concept. Try to think about not telling your audience / reader the info, but just showing the effects of the event and weaving it in insidiously so that the reader just takes it for granted. Bad examples of a good idea:
Telling: Bobbie had an illegitimate child, Ted.
Showing: Bobbie picked up the photo of her and Ted, her son. He was blonde, blue-eyed, and looked like his father, Jim.
Bobbie’s husband, Lars, walked into the kitchen.
Camping is a great way to see the world at very little expense. Almost every state (in the US) and every country in the world have campgrounds that are open to the public. There are a few that are free to use, but most charge at least a small fee for use of the grounds. Here are a few stops to get you started on your outdoor adventures.
Alaska – Denali National Park offers several camping areas for those adventurers willing to brave the elements and the animals.
Alabama – Blue Springs State Park (located near Ozark, Alabama) is a 103 acre park that’s center of attention is the swimming pool and spring pool which are both fed by an underground spring.
Arkansas – Caddo River in Glenwood, Arkansas is a great place for roughing it in complete luxury. It offers beautiful cabins and bunkhouses at reasonable prices (or you can just stay in your tent if you prefer).
Colorado – The camping sites at Black Canyon of the Gunnison fill up quickly during the summer months. It offers some of the most sheer walls, narrow openings and startling depths in North America.
Delaware – Trap Pond State Park offers a unique experience of Delaware’s Cypress Swamp. It offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities and camping experiences.
Georgia – Red Top Mountain State Park and Lodge is off the 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona in Georgia. It offers a lot of great activities for the whole family.
Iowa - Muscatine County, Iowa has a hidden Gem in the Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area. Camping is free on Wednesdays (from May – October) and it offers some of the best environmental education programs around.
Motorcycle accidents are a well-known leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Together with auto accidents, they are the single largest cause of brain injury in the United States. One out of every five motorcycle accidents results in head or neck injuries, which account for most motorcycle fatalities. And partly because drivers often don’t see motorcyclists or yield them the right-of-way, motorcyclists are at higher risk of an accident than drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that, per mile traveled in 2003, a motorcyclist was 32 times more likely to die in an accident than a passenger in a car.
Motorcyclists, even those who wear helmets, are most likely to sustain non-penetrative injuries to the front of the head, damaging parts of the brain responsible for speech and higher functions. Those without helmets may also be susceptible to a penetrating brain injury, in which an object enters the head and skull, damaging the soft tissue of the brain itself.
Helmets Essential to Prevent Traumatic Brain Injury
